We have taught our current house chicken, Corduroy, to come when called. We started with treats and now if you can’t find her, you can call “Corduroy!” and she will come running. She went to bed in her tent (we use a Zampa) and we worried she had gone down to the basement. We called “Corduroy!” and she groggily came out of her room covered in pine and borbed on my foot. 💜

One of the luckiest, most unexpected feathery friend moments I have had in the last few years:
I drive up close to the Canada border to the Whatcom Animal Shelter to transport a chicken down to the Seattle area. When I went to pick her up, the staff asked if I could take 4 more. Of course, I was only there for transport to an adopter, so I couldn’t bring them 5 chickens instead of 1! But I walked back to the back of the shelter and laid eyes on 4 gorgeous friends who were a bonded, bright eyed flock and I couldn’t say no! So I loaded all 5 chickens into my work van, dropped the 1 transport girl off in Seattle, and then made my way down to Oregon with 4 new ladies that I had no idea I’d be bringing home with me.
I honestly can’t imagine our flock without them! Every day, they make me laugh out loud with their huge personalities and silly habits. I absolutely adore all of my chickens, and I can’t imagine my life without every single one of them!
And PS – right now, I use a big ol pillow to block their coop hole at night. An automatic chicken coop door would be incredible for our lil microsanctuary!!
